Why some tiers reuse the Mid-range pick
- Budget, light: Same as Mid-range. A cheaper reef LED we looked at (Nicrew HyperReef 100 Gen 2) was listed at only one specialty store we could check, so we can't price it fairly yet.
- Budget, protein skimmer (hang-on): All three tiers use this skimmer: it's the cheapest one we found that is rated well above 55 gal. The Reef Octopus Classic 100 HOB is a good alternative (rated 55 gal for heavy bioloads).
- Premium, protein skimmer (hang-on): Same as Mid-range: the larger hang-on skimmers we checked don't skim a 55 meaningfully better.
- Premium, heater: Same as Mid-range: the controller already provides the safety cutoff.
- Premium, dry rock: Same as Mid-range: pricier rock doesn't improve the tank.
- Premium, ro/di water: Same as Mid-range: bigger units only make water faster.
Budget is the cheapest reliable option that meets the requirement. Mid-range is the best balance. Premium has to add a real gain, or it reuses the Mid-range pick.
What the Mid-range list costs to run
About $36.22 a month, so the first year comes to about $3,304 including setup. That's 376 W of rated equipment (114.9 kWh a month) at 17¢ per kWh, with the light on 8 hours a day and the heater on 30% of the time, plus supplies. Food isn't included.
| Electricity | $19.54 |
| Salt | $10.72 |
| RO/DI resin and filters | $5.15 |
| Testing | $0.81 |
| Total per month | $36.22 |
The 55-gallon running-cost page works through the same tank line by line with a typical calculator setup, so its figure differs slightly from this exact list.
Is a all-in-one (AIO) reef tank cheaper?
The Red Sea MAX NANO G2 XXL (53 gal) with cabinet costs about $2,302. Adding what it lacks ($400) brings it to $2,702, against $1,769 for the same items in our Mid-range list, so the kit path is $933 more.
A 53-gal, 35 × 22 in rimless tank, so it's a slightly smaller, deeper footprint than a 55..
| Part | In the AIO | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | 53-gal rimless tank | Included: replaces our row |
| Stand | Cabinet | Included: replaces our row |
| Light | 2 × ReefLED G2 60 lights with arms | Included: replaces our row |
| Protein skimmer (hang-on) | Built-in protein skimmer in the rear sump | Included: replaces our row |
| Hang-on filter (floss and carbon) | Rear sump with filter sock, media rack and bubble traps (replaces a hang-on filter) | Included: replaces our row |
| Powerheads | 2 × 410 gph return nozzles: about 15× turnover, below our 20× target | Upgrade needed: buy ours too, +$400 |

Contents: Bulk Reef Supply listing: what's included.Good to know
- Heavy items: the tank, stand, dry rock and sand are expensive to ship. Local pickup often saves money. Filled, a standard 55-gallon tank weighs about 625 lb, so the stand has to be made for it.
- Why there's no sump: A standard 55-gallon stand is about 13 inches deep, too shallow for most sumps, and a hang-on overflow adds flood risk. This build uses hang-on equipment instead. An AIO tank (right) has its sump built in.
- Water: the list includes an RO/DI unit to make your own water. If you'd rather buy RO water, the planner lets you swap it out.
- Not included: fish, coral, plants and cleanup crew; food, décor and light mounts; shipping and sales tax; electrical work, a GFCI outlet or a surge strip.
- Before you add fish: cycle the tank first, which usually takes several weeks. Test ammonia and nitrite until both read zero and nitrate starts to rise, then add livestock slowly.

How we size each item, and where prices come from
- Aqueon critical dimensions and filled weights (2023 PDF)
- Complete Aquatics: filter turnover of 4–6× tank volume per hour
- Bulk Reef Supply: reef flow of 20–30× display volume
- Fluval heater sizing (the rule our running-cost calculator uses)
- AquaIllumination: Prime 16HD is 59 W with a 24 × 24 in spread
- Bulk Reef Supply: about 1 lb of dry rock per gallon
- Top Shelf Aquatics sand-bed calculator (L × W × depth ÷ 1,728 × ~100 lb/ft³)
- Bulk Reef Supply: about 0.5 gal/day evaporation for a 36 × 18 in tank (scaled by footprint)
- Listings: hand-picked items checked at 13 stores (AquaticMotiv, Blue Fish Aquarium, Buce Plant, Bulk Reef Supply, Glass Aqua, Inkbird, Ken's Fish, Pets Warehouse, Premium Aquatics, Rockland Aquarium, Top Shelf Aquatics, Tropical Showcase, World Wide Corals) on Oct 19, 2026, Oct 24, 2026. Each item needs 2+ non-Amazon stores; a listing older than 45 days is dropped. The estimated budget is the median listing, rounded.
- How we choose: performance, reliability, value and fit for the tank, without regard to brand or commission. Credible reports of serious problems can rule an item out.
